Every now and then a New Jersey employer will face a charge filed in the EEOC. That’s the Federal Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. The EEOC is charged with investigating complaints against employers to see if they violated federal law, and to make some kind of reasonable resolution for the employee if they find that that’s happened. The way that it works in New Jersey, though, is that the EEOC has teamed up with the Division on Civil Rights, which is a state agency, which handles most claims against New Jersey employers that are originally filed in the EEOC. They engage in fact finding, whether it’s the DCR or the EEOC, and make a recommendation on a resolution.
