Is a Severance Package Required by Law?

business handshake lawyerWe get calls from employees who have just been laid off, and they’re outraged that they haven’t gotten a severance package, even if they’ve been working for a company for a number of years. Well, unfortunately, there is no obligation under New Jersey law for a company to give an employee a severance package, and so if they haven’t offered you one, they’re under no obligation to do so, and there is no legal right you have to enforce.
